Hikes, Waterfalls, and hidden Gems of Stowe VT

Let’s Go Chasing Waterfalls

Bingham Falls

A great swimming hole with shockingly refreshing crystal-clear water from mountain streams in a pristine, scenic gorge. Only a half-mile walk but some parts are steep and can be slippery when wet so good shoes are advisable. Located off Mountain Road near Stowe Mountain Resort just a few minutes up the road from Timberholm.

Moss Glen Falls

A mostly flat walk to a beautiful waterfall in the woods. Continue on trails above the falls if you are looking for a longer hike. Not a great swimming hole but there is a small splash pool to cool off. Can be very busy so a good one to go earlier in the morning or on a cloudy day when the crowds are elsewhere.

Sterling Gorge

A hidden gem that is left off most tourist guides and maps. A beautiful walk through an old mossy forest high above the Sterling Gorge leads to a small swimming hole with crystal-clear water. Located in the Sterling Valley hills above Stowe.

Bolton Potholes

Located right off the road at the base of the Bolton ski resort road is this famous swimming hole and summer favorite for locals and visitors alike. Check water depths before jumping off into the water and be careful of high flow areas after rain.

Local Favorite Day Hikes

Stowe Pinnacle

Stowe’s most popular hike (for good reason). With two options for starting points, this is a great medium hike or longer hike depending on your preference. Beautiful views of the Green Mountains and a legendary spot to watch the sunset on a clear day. The trail is very steep in sections and can be slippery so come prepared.

Mount Mansfield ViaThe Haselton Trail

A great hike, on the longer side but well worth it for the views on the legendary Nosedive ski trail and scenery along the way. A local secret: 3/4 of the way up, take a right on Cliff Trail and traverse over to the top of the Gondola and take the gondola down to the parking lot instead of hiking free of charge.

Hunger Mountain

A great off-the-beaten-track hike with two for the price of one views of both Stowe to the north and the Worcester Valley to the south. On the longer side but doable for most. Highly recommend this to anyone looking for a less busy hike during peak summer months or fall foliage.

Sterling Pond

A popular hike starting just off the Notch road between mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak. On the shorter side but fairly steep. Finishes at a gorgeous mountaintop pond with the option to go just a bit further to the top of spruce peak where you can sit on a chairlift and take in the views of Stowe far below.
